Realising Meaningful Human Control Over Automated Driving Systems
Within defence, the concept of meaningful human control (MHC) is incredibly important in the context of autonomous weapon systems. However, MHC is not limited to autonomous weapon systems alone. In this paper, Santoni de Sio et al. discuss the role of MHC in automated driving systems. They offer an important contribution to the discussion of meaningful human control by providing a concrete concept of how MHC can be defined. Through the ideas of tracking and tracing, Santoni de Sio et al. provide a high-level definition of MHC that can be further operationalised to combat responsibility gaps.
